Little red riding hood
It was a rainy holiday so we decided to play: Little red riding hood. Since I was sick I was granny.
Once upon a time there was a little girl taking a basket with food to her sick granny living in the forest.
Can you see her? That little girl carrying a heavy basket? (baskets are even heavy when they are empty) The basket is filled with cookies and wine and who knows what more.
While dragging the basket with her she saw some nice flowers. She really wanted to pick them but that was not allowed. Why? Because her mother (who was not in the mood to walk whole the way to granny's house by herself) told her to stay on the path. So she did for a while.
Since she was really little and tired she decided to rest for a while under a tree.
As she just sat down a beautiful black dog showed up.
Hi doggy, she said, how are you doing? I am fine, said the dog who actually was a wolf, although I do feel a bit hungry.
Well, the girl said, you can have a chocolate cookie, granny is sick anyway.
The girl wasn't surprised the dog could talk, since all kids can talk with animals.
How far away is your granny living, the wolf asked. I don't know, the girl said, I don't have a watch and if I wouldn't be able to read it. Mom says granny lives in a little house with a red roof at the end of this path. Great, the wolf says, take your time and enjoy your walk.
The wolf wasn't that young anymore, he was alone and not really a great hunter since he had no teeth anymore. One cookie wasn't really killing his hunger, so he decided to pay granny a visit.
He knocked on the door and barked to let him in.
Since granny was old and partly deaf she yelled she couldn't come out of bed to open the door. He should pull the rope and let himself in!
So the wolf did. He entered the small, empty cottage with not one single piece of food on the table. Mad for hunger the old guy jumped on granny's bed. He swallowed the tasteless old lady in one piece (it makes you wonder how big the wolf's throat must be that he can do that, but if you see what my big brother can eat you have a good idea of that).
A bit later the little girl arrived. She knocked on the door and the wolf woke up. He told her to pull that rope, so she did.
Hi granny, she said, look what I have. A basket full of wine and cookies and something else. Mommy thinks you will like that.
Great the wolf said. Thanks a lot. After keeping silence for a while the girl starts getting bored. Visiting old, sick granny's isn't really very exiting. She felt tired also, so she asked granny if she could lay next to her in bed for a while.
That was fine with the wolf who felt tired too.
After a while the girl started asking questions. Why you have such big eyes, why you have such big ears, etc etc.. The only thing she didn't ask was why granny was so hairy.
The wolf, who just wanted his rest and sleep for a while, told her to shut up. He felt sick and his head was banging. But the little girl kept on asking annoying questions and it was clear she had no intentions to stop with it.
She really drove that poor, old wolf crazy with her: why, what, how come.. He grabbed her and swallowed her too. At last the wolf had his rest and could sleep in peace.
Well that is what you think. But there was also a very curious and bored hunter. Since he wasn't that successful at his job he decided to go boring the old lady. As he entered the cottage he saw the bottle of wine on the table and the cookies. Lucky me, he thought.
Do you mind if I take some, he asked. Only a growl came for an answer. A bit alarmed he went closer to the bed. He couldn't believe his eyes. In there wasn't granny sleeping but a big fat wolf. He grabbed his bow and arrow and shot the wolf right in his heart. Well he tried.. but since he wasn't such a great hunter he had to finish the job with stabbing the wolf in his belly a few extra times.
While stabbing and thinking of the great coat he would make out of the wolf's skin, the belly teared open and granny and the little girl came out.
Can you imagine how shocked that hunter must have been?
A good thing there was at least 1 bottle of wine (now we know why there was wine in the basket). So granny and the hunter got drunk and fall asleep and as they all woke up it showed up to be just a bad dream.
Ps. there are so many versions of "Little red riding hood" one of the best is written by: Tomi Ungerer. After you read that you won't have to ask: why, what, how come... anymore.
